SUPERGIRL Spoiler Free Review

Supergirl is a fun, entertaining movie that you can watch, enjoy some popcorn, and be hyped for the future of the DCU. This version of Supergirl is grieving. She's grieving the loss of her planet, of her family, of her friends, of her life. She's going through the motions, the different stages of grief: depression, hope, fear, sadness, longing, confusion.

The movie delves into deep themes of just getting through the motions, trying to survive day by day. The movie follows her from different planets, different scenarios, different situations of her “moving along”. She meets a girl who reflects her younger self, a broken girl and saves this girl from a situation that otherwise would have been a bleak telling.

Kara also saves herself at the same time (respecting the NON Spoiler Review), while seeing herself in this girl. She becomes the hero she needs to be, the hero her parents knew she would always be, the hero her cousin Superman, Clark, has become but in her own right, by following her own path. There are strong themes of finding one's purpose, and that's in the forefront of this movie.

Action: well done. Supergirl as a character realized. Side characters: really well done. Jason Momoa: fine for the time he shows up on screen, which is about three minutes in total. Nothing spectacular, but fine. Everyone across the board, every cast member, was fine.

Now come the issues. Some of the pacing was off. Some of the visual effects were off. That's all I have for cons. There's going to be a lot of chatter online about this movie being terrible or “trash”. Movies are subjective. Art is subjective.

It's not for everyone, so go out, buy a ticket, get some popcorn, have a drink, and see this movie for yourself and take away what you believe this story is telling. Again, this is a spoiler-free review, so I don't want to go into specific details and beats of this film. There are some serious topics this movie touches on, some of which may be triggering for some viewers, but that's what I respect.

This movie isn't afraid to hit home and to highlight something that's going on very real in the real world here in the US.

Supergirl is out now in theaters. Watch it on the BIGGEST screen you can & fly higher than ever before.
