Mortal Kombat 2 Spoiler Free Review

#MortalKombat 2 Spoiler Free Review

Mortal Kombat 2 is a fantastic leap forward and a great direction for the sequel! It’s improved on everything from action sequences, battles, visual style, and more. Fan-favorite characters are back, along with some characters that fans weren’t too thrilled with, but they get some amazing hero moments.

New characters like Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Shao Khan (Martyn Ford), and Jade (played by the stunning Tati Gabrielle) are introduced. This time, the story centers around the tournament and the new hero of Earth, Johnny Cage. He’s the main point of view for the audience as we follow the tournament of realms, with Earth at stake. Earth has already lost 9 out of 10 tournaments, so this last chance for Earth hangs in the balance as its chosen heroes defend it. Johnny, Sonya, Jax, Liu, and the most beloved Cole Young (lol) pull out all the stops to make sure Earth doesn’t fall to Shao Khan and the Outworld.

The video games that inspired the films are beautifully realized, with stages (sets), fatalities (kills), special moves (fighter attacks), and breakers (fighters using a move to stop ongoing attacks). Video game fans are going to be thrilled watching the battles in this movie. The cast and crew completely understood the assignment and injected it with top-notch respect for detail and fan feedback. I can’t stress it enough. This film was made for fans while inviting newcomers to the party.

Standouts include Kitana, Johnny, Shao Khan, and YES! Cole Young. IMO, he has a very nice moment in the film that I know for a fact fans will applaud. While the film mostly follows Johnny answering the call as a hero, it’s also Kitana’s film. Adeline (Kitana) has a lot to handle in this film as the anchor. She gives 200% of herself to give the best iteration of this character through emotion, physicality, and respect for the legacy placed before and behind her. You will hear me speak a lot about respect because that’s exactly how this sequel was produced.

Respect is a key reason why each character acts. Shao Khan fights for respect across the realms by instilling fear. Kitana gains respect for her legacy in Edenia through Mortal Kombat. Johnny learns to respect himself and his skills as a fighter for Earth. Jade earns respect by choosing her found family over her duties. Throughout the movie, it prompts you to look beyond the surface to discover purpose. Cole Young (Lewis Tan) has earned my respect in this film. He truly embodies a warrior spirit, showcased with grace and a truly badass fight scene.

The FIGHTS!

Get ready to sit back and grab your controllers. Every fight feels like a video game match, even with the gong signaling the start. I felt joy seeing and hearing the little details throughout the film. My heart was pumping with each punch, sound design crunch, music beats/score, and the “FINISH HIM!” call-outs. YES! It’s a “FINISH HIM!” moment. If you know you know.

Kano is back this round (no spoilers, he’s in trailers), and he doesn’t disappoint with his jokes and snarky lines. He’s truly goated in that sense. Jax (Mehcad Brooks) stood out to me. He’s really a heartbeat. He cares for his friends and even his opponents. He fights with purpose, grace, and honor. He’s the epitome of a soldier. Sonya Blade also has some great battles, especially with Queen Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen). The battle tho quick, but brutal. Ana has a small role here, but she adds a stunning yet sad layer to Sindel. Again, this is spoiler-free, so let’s move on before I say too much.

Ludi Lin and Max Huang (Lui Kang and Kung Lao), truly shine! It’s not just the physical battles that captivate, but the emotional struggles they face are front and center. You can feel Lui Kang’s turmoil as he battles his brother for the Earth Realm. Baraka (CJ Bloomfield) is surprisingly charming. He’s definitely a capable warrior and a valuable asset to any alliance he joins in honor of Johnny Cage. Wink Wink! Lol.

Most of the big GUNS are sidelined. Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Quan Chi (Damon Herriman), Shang Tsung (Chin Han), Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), and Sub-Zero/Bi-Han (Johannes Taslim) don’t do much. But the battle between Sub and Scorpion… WIN for us, the viewers!

The visuals are hit or miss for me. Some of the CGI looks like they were done on a computer with a broken mouse from 1998, lol. There’s a scene with Raiden and Shang Tsung that had me laughing so hard I almost cried (in a bad, cringe way). But those moments are rare.

I want to give a special shoutout to the young actress who plays young Kitana, Sophia Xu. She tackles some really tough emotional scenes early on and handles them with a maturity that’s impressive for a youngling. She definitely has a bright future ahead.

With everything laid-out on the big screen, Mortal Kombat is a win for fans of the game and fans of martial arts. Both are highlighted with grace and respect from start to finish. MK2 is a 7.5 out of 10.
